How to specify carbon black for technical compounds
Grade, reinforcement, color and conductivity: what to ask when specifying carbon black for rubber, tires and masterbatch.
Specify grade, not just “black”
Carbon black is not one product. Structure, specific surface and grade define mechanical reinforcement, processability, jetness and, in some cases, conductivity. Asking for “N550 or similar” with no matrix context is the shortcut that creates scrap.
Rubber vs masterbatch
In rubber and tires, the focus is usually reinforcement, abrasion and modulus. In masterbatch, dispersion, coverage and color stability dominate. The same pigment/filler family needs different trial readings.
