TiO₂: opacity, UV and when to use an extender
How to specify titanium dioxide without wasting cost: coverage, UV resistance and the role of carbonate/pigment as extender.
Opacity has a price
TiO₂ delivers whiteness, coverage and UV protection — but overdosing without an extension strategy raises masterbatch, PVC and coating cost without proportional performance.
When an extender makes sense
Carbonate and other minerals can complement bulk and cost when opacity targets allow. It is a formulation call: measure coverage, yellowing and dispersion in the same vehicle.
- ▸Separate UV goal vs cost goal.
- ▸Validate TiO₂ dispersion before raising dosage.
- ▸Trial mineral extension in parallel.
Plectus path
Use PVC, coatings and masterbatch landings. Sample TiO₂ and, if it fits, carbonate/pigment in the same technical evaluation request.
