When to use magnesium stearate vs calcium or zinc

Quick guide to choosing metal stearates: powder flow and cosmetics (Mg), PVC and mortar (Ca), lubrication and mold release (Zn).

They are not interchangeable

Calcium, zinc and magnesium stearates share a chemical family but answer different pains. Swapping one for another “because it is cheaper” usually shifts the problem to color, flow or caking.

Quick decision map

Use magnesium when the bottleneck is powder flow and anti-caking (cosmetics, pulverulents, dosing). Prefer calcium in rigid PVC and cementitious systems needing thermal stabilization and a hydrophobic effect. Choose zinc when mold release, auxiliary stabilization and masterbatch sit at the center.

  • Ca → rigid PVC, mortar, hydrophobicity.
  • Zn → mold release, PVC/rubber, pigmentation.

How to qualify a switch
