How to choose Zinc Stearate for your formulation

Technical criteria to specify zinc stearate in PVC, rubber and masterbatch: purity, particle size, dosage and process signals.

When zinc stearate belongs in the formula

Zinc stearate works as an auxiliary thermal stabilizer and lubricant (internal/external) in PVC, elastomers and pigmented compounds. It belongs when yellowing, mold sticking or uneven pigment dispersion show up — not as a generic “fill the formula” commodity.

Before specifying, map the matrix (rigid/flexible PVC, rubber, masterbatch), the process (extrusion, injection, mixing) and the dominant symptom: color, torque, release or finish.

Specification criteria

Purity, moisture and particle size drive performance and lot consistency. In masterbatch, coarse particles hurt dispersion; in PVC, balance with other lubricants avoids blooming and plate-out.

  • Define the main job: stabilization, lubrication or mold release.
  • Match particle size to dosing equipment.
  • Validate CoA (purity, moisture) per lot in qualification.
  • Run step-dosage trials reading torque and color.

Common plant mistakes

The classic error is raising dosage to “kill” torque without reviewing the full lubrication package. Another is treating zinc, calcium and magnesium stearates as interchangeable — each answers a different pain.
